Within a short drive of Mazamet there are a number of places to see and things to do, this is not an exhaustive list, and over a welcome drink we chat to guests about what can be seen close by, or further away.
Mazamet’s neighbouring town, just 15 mins (by car, bus or Train), is well worth a visit. The river Agout runs through the middle of the town and provides a great focal point with medieval houses stretching into the water. A boat trip, weekly markets, a visit to the “Musee de Goya” (a Spanish art museum on account of Goya’s presence in the town towards the end of his life) and a stunning topiary garden are just some of the attractions.
Another of Castres attractions is the municipal leisure park, L' Archipel, with ice skating, indoor & outdoor swimming pools, golf and waterpark – a day-out in its own right.
On a much smaller scale, the medieval village of Hautpoul clings to the side of the mountain just 10 mins from Mazamet (or an hours walk). Dating back to the 12th century, and still an inhabited village, Hautpoul was the centre of Catharisme in the middle ages and played an important part in the sieges that took place in the area around 1209.
This beautiful lake, set high above Mazamet in the Montagne Noire (Black Mountains) and is just 10 mins by car. During July & August there is also a free shuttle bus that runs between the railways station (200 metres from La Villa) and the Lake. At the lake you can sit and watch the world go by, enjoy lunch or a snack at the restaurant, enjoy a refreshing dip, or walk off some calories on the guided walks (5km to 55km).
Mazamet's "La Barouge" golf club is just 5 km from La Villa and offers a fairly challenging 18 holes with excellent maintained greens & fairways. The backdrop of the Montagne Noire is just stunning and we can arrange tee times for you and advise of course closures (for local competitions).
A great activity that takes you speeding down through the forests of the Montagne Noire on specially adapted bikes – we can arrange this activity with a local family-run business.
Take a trek for a few hours, or half a day, through the stunning countryside just north of Mazamet with a local riding school.
In July & August, one of the local canoe clubs offers half or full day escorted kayaking on a beautiful stretch on the river "Agout" from the picturesque village of Burlats (just outside of Castres) .
Commencing from the Lac des Montagne, just 10 mins south of Mazamet, are a number of self-guided walks that range from 5km to 55km distance. For a group, we can organise a fully escorted walk with a qualified mountaineer if you fancy something slightly more challenging!
