Come take a peak at the wines you can enjoy at La Villa in 2019 & the importance of supporting local vineyards.
It has been our ethos, since our opening day, to source & buy wines from our region. You won’t find a Bordeaux or a Burgundy on our wine list… but many great wines which are all from within 90 mins of La Villa.
Not only that, we buy our wines from small, independent vineyards. This not only helps us provide a wine list containing labels that our guests may not otherwise discover – it also allows us to support other small businesses too.
This past year, never has this ethos been so important as we learned about the venerability of small independent vineyards. In October, terrible flash flooding, on the south side of the Montagne Noire, brought devastation and loss of life to a number of small communities and their businesses.
One vineyard, Chateau Salitis, lost not only acres of their vines, but also much of their newly bottled 2018 wines – washed from their cellars with the deluge of rising waters. This small domaine, just 35 mins from La Villa, holds a special place in our hearts as it was the very first wines we ever bought when stocking our cellars back in 2009. By increasing our order, encouraging friends & family to buy from them and also adding their Viognier to our 2019 wine list it’s a small way in which we can help the family bounce-back from these difficult times.
Another vineyard, though through different environmental conditions, also suffered devastating losses early in the growing season. Domaine de Trinities, located in Faugeres is a fully organic vineyard and suffered a 70% drop in their grape yield due to mildew caused by a warm then damp spring in 2018. It was only in early April this year, when collecting our wines, that we learnt from the owners what had occurred and the impact on them as the pray for better growing conditions in 2019.
There are a number of vineyards we buy from that welcome visitors for tastings – Chateau Salitis & Domaine de Trinities being two of them – these are small & rustic and make a small cover charge for the tasting, normally 10€ pp. We can also arrange tastings at Chateau de Caux & Sauzens, near Carcassonne where the tour includes a walk amongst the vines that border the Canal du Midi before a tasting in the cellars.
We hope that you enjoy reading, and dinking, the wines on our 2019 wine list
